Abstract
Abstract: The incidence of infestation on mountain pine (Pinus mugo Turra) by the needle‐shortening gall midge Thecodiplosis brachyntera (Schwägr.) was investigated in the years 1967–1970 during an outbreak of this pest in the Krkonoše mountains in north‐eastern Bohemia. The incidence of infestation throughout the area surveyed appeared to be very irregular and concentrated in foci. The data obtained were compared with the published report of Nelson, Shields and Platt (1969) establishing the incidence of infestation by the pine needle gall fly, Itonida pinirigidae Pack., on Pinus taeda Mill. and P. echinata Mill. The infestation was correlated with radiation exposures of 2000–2599 rads 2 years previously. On the basis of our studies of the dispersal of the needle‐shortening gall midge Thecodiplosis brachyntera on mountain pines in Czechoslovakia, we assume that in cases of increased occurrence of I. pinirigidae on Pinus taeda and P. echinata Mill. in an area irradiated with 2000–2599 rads there is no correlation with the effects of radiation, but a mere irregular dispersal of this pest under natural conditions.
